For someone who embraces Islam, questions about death and burial can be particularly difficult. They may have family members who are not Muslim, may not have discussed their wishes with those closest to them, or may not know how to ensure their Islamic funeral rites are carried out.
The Convert Care Standard: Death & Burial provides practical guidance and resources to help organisations, mosques and those supporting converts prepare for these situations with confidence, compassion and care.
When a Muslim convert dies, their wishes and Islamic funeral rites can sometimes be misunderstood or overlooked.
Without appropriate preparation, families and those supporting the deceased may face difficult questions around:
Islamic funeral and burial requirements
Supporting non-Muslim family members
Ensuring everyone involved understands what needs to happen
Good preparation can make an incredibly difficult time easier for everyone.
The Death & Burial Standard brings together practical guidance, resources and templates to help convert-care organisations and mosques provide consistent and compassionate support.
It covers:
Preparing for death and discussing wishes
Supporting the deceased's family and loved ones
Islamic funeral and burial arrangements
Working with non-Muslim relatives
Supporting families through bereavement
Signposting to appropriate services and support
The Death & Burial Standard is supported by a practical eight-booklet resource pack, designed to be used by organisations, mosques, volunteers and those supporting converts.
The resources are designed to help people know what to do, who to contact and how to provide appropriate support at what can be an overwhelming time.
The materials can be used alongside existing organisational policies and procedures and adapted to suit local circumstances.
Death can be particularly challenging when a convert's family and friends are not Muslim.
The standard recognises the importance of supporting everyone affected by the death, while ensuring the deceased's Islamic wishes and funeral rites are respected.
This may include helping non-Muslim relatives understand Islamic burial practices, explaining what will happen, facilitating appropriate involvement and ensuring they have an opportunity to say goodbye.
Compassion and Islamic practice do not have to be in conflict.
The Death & Burial Standard is designed for:
Mosques
Convert-care organisations
Community organisations
Volunteers and pastoral support teams
Anyone supporting a Muslim convert and their family
The Death & Burial Standard is part of the Convert Care Standards developed by the Convert Muslim Foundation to encourage consistent, compassionate and practical support for people who embrace Islam.
Because every convert deserves to have their wishes understood, their faith respected and their dignity protected.
