What can the Muslim Community do to support new Muslims?
There are several things the Muslim Community can do to support new Muslims:
1) Give of your time
Facilitating
Giving of your precious time to attend events organised for converts to Islam and their families and act as hospitable and welcoming facilitators / enablers / ambassadors for Islam. Hosting iftars and Eid parties is a really thoughtful and welcoming invitation
Mentorship
Become trained up and act as a mentor to someone who has just converted to Islam. Help guide them in learning the basics as well as building their confidence while allowing them to be themselves and develop their own coping strategies and mechanisms in dealing with the outcome of conversion.
Volunteer at a local support group
This can be as direct facilitator or behind the scenes helping with administration, marketing and fundraising.
you can search our directory to find groups in the UK: www.convertcare.org
2) Be a good brother/sister in Islam
‘Want for your brother or sister in Islam what you would want for yourself.’
Emotional Support
Be understanding and compassionate, especially as they adjust to cultural and lifestyle changes. Be a listening ear when they need to share their experiences.
Cultural Sensitivity
Respect their background and individuality. Help them integrate their new faith into their existing identity in a way that's authentic and comfortable.
Community Building
Promote unity and prevent isolation by actively including converts in group activities or initiatives. Include them in Mosque activites consider having them on your board of trustees, converts to Islam often have a wealth of experience they can offer
Letter Writing
Writing a letter to a convert to Islam who is at home alone, in prison, hospital or in long term care. Letters are a lifeline and very often a means to opening up an otherwise dark and silent world and creating lasting and supportive relationships.
Be active in flagging up opportunities that will sincerely and thoughtfully enhance convert's knowledge, learning Arabic, visiting places of interest and historic value, encouraging converts to Islam to meet other like-minded Muslims, introduce life partners, job possibilities
3) Support financially
Zakat and Sadaqah
Convert Care and its parent charity - The Convert Muslim Foundation (CMF) focuses on addressing the issues faced by converts to Islam, especially after their conversion. This aligns with one of the eight Zakat categories in the Quran: Al-Mu’allafatu Qulubuhum, which refers to reconciling hearts. CMF supports converts holistically, dealing with social and psychological disruptions caused by their conversion, and relies on public donations of Sadaqah Jariyah and Zakat to fund its activities.
Leaving a Legacy
Is there anything better or more desired than the ongoing blessing of a Sadaqah Jariyah – one that will continue for generations into the future and with continuous reference and accumulated blessings to that first and most generous donation. DONATE NOW
Regular Donation
Standing Orders would help to boost resources so that events could be planned in advance and in the knowledge that there are funds to meet the needs of those who would like to avail of educational, spiritual or social opportunities but do not have the financial resources to do so.
